Chapter 1: Introduction
It's a glorious day here at Cabinet Joint. I'm Justin, and in today's video, I'm going to show you how to install your drawer glide on a prep-full store side cabinet.
So, as you can see, I have one already installed. This is your normal drawer slide installation. It has the back bracket, but on this other side here, it has a prep-full store. And essentially, what that means is the cabinet side is being moved further into the interior of the cabinet.
And what that does is it doesn't allow us to have the rear bracket in the back because it no longer fits. I can butt it up against the side all I want, but ultimately that doesn't fit. So, it just requires a simple modification as you go to install your drawer glide.
This option is only available in overlay because you are losing some of that interior space between the front of the frame as well as the cabinet side. You can no longer then fit your brackets that you need for your inset hardware.
On screen are going to be the tools that you need for this installation.
Chapter 2: Tools & Supplies
And once you have those tools ready, we can get right into the install.
So, as mentioned, on this side over here, that's going to be your standard cabinet side.
Chapter 3: Drawer Glide Installation
So, we were able to utilize the pre-drilled holes for the back bracket.
This cabinet will still have pre-drilled holes on the other side. And as you can see, as we were assembling the cabinet, we jumped the gun and put in that back bracket. So, we had to take it off. No worries, it's all going to get covered by the drawer anyway.
But now, what we need to do is, first of all, make your ¼" spacers. I just took a 2x4 to the table saw and cut a ¼" strip. And those will be used to space in the glide off of here.
But we need to take the measurements in order to know where to place these. So, we're going to take a measurement from the front of the cabinet here and just go to the center of where our screws are going to end up.
So, it looks like we're right at 10" and then 20⅛". So, I'm going to come over to the other side and I'm going to replicate those measurements.
So, I'm going to once again measure from the front. Going to make a mark at 10". And these measurements here aren't super, don't need to be super precise. These are more so giving you an idea of where to install those blocks.
And now I'm going to measure from the top of the cabinet.
And I'm going to measure to the top of this center rail. So, I'm looking right at 6½".
With that measurement in mind, I'm going to come to those marks that we previously made and I'm going to measure down 6½".
And now we can take our block as well as some screws. And I'm just using the large screws that come with your drawer glides. If you have any extra laying around, you can use them. If you don't have any extra, you can just run to your local hardware store and just pick up ½" screws with a countersunk head like this.
So, taking our ¼" block, which I went ahead and pre-drilled and countersunk, I'm going to place it on the wall of the cabinet here, and I'm going to align the bottom with that 6½" mark that we made.
And then I'm just going to center the block up with our line that we made drawing back. Now, it doesn't need to be perfectly centered, but just generally in that region.
So, then taking those ½" screws, I'm going to install our blocking.
I recommend using at least three screws per each block because these are transferring the weight of your drawer glide and then ultimately of your drawer.
So, if there's not good strength there, it might end up affecting your drawer later on. I'm going to do the exact same thing here on the other side.
And now we have our blocks in place and we're ready to put on our drawer glide.
So then I can take my drawer glide. And it would be probably helpful to have two sets of hands here, but we can manage with one. I'm going to rest it.
And the reason we put it there at 6½" is now I know where the bottom of my drawer glide should go in order for it to be leveled.
I'm going to measure back ³⁄₁₆" because this is overlay. You can use a tape measure if you don't have one of these gauges. And then I am going to take my self-centering bit and then install that front screw.
Now I'm going to go to my middle using that self-centering bit. Drilling another hole here in the spacer and installing that.
Now you can let go with your other hand. It should hold itself. I'm going to install one last screw here.
So, normally we would use the back brackets that come with your drawer glides, but because we're using the spacers and those screws, that is now holding the load and we no longer need this bracket.
With that all installed, we are ready to put in our drawer box.
So, while these glides were installed differently, the important thing to remember is that they are spaced back from the front frame equally and that both of them are equal and parallel.
And that will set you up for success and a long-lasting drawer.
And with that being said, I can go ahead and install this drawer.
And you know it's installed when you hear that click.
And now it's all ready to go. And that's all there is to installing your drawer glides on a Prep Store cabinet side.
Chapter 4: The Finished Product & Summary
Don't panic when your back bracket doesn't fit. It's a simple, easy step, just adding those blocks. And then you're going to get the same exact result as you would otherwise.
So now, with that all ready to go, the customer can then go and install their end panel.
And there's going to be doors on top of here as well. We're not going to install that here in the shop. We're going to let them do that there in the field. But you can get the idea of what the finished product will look like.
So, if you have any other questions, you can reach out to your cabinet coach, or you can call us at 888-21-6482.
Thank you for watching. Have a great day.
