Alongside having great taste and an eye for detail, Kate Pearce has wisdom to share. In her blog “Our 2023 Eclectic Modern Kitchen Reveal”, readers get to see the thought processes she uses to create a wonderfully curated and anomalous space. Without further ado, read the following pearls of wisdom for inspiration on creating a kitchen that is standout, tailored to your tastes, and tied together with style.

1. Choose Your Stone First

Pearce’s eclectic kitchen vision included a strongly veined marble with personality, called a Paonazzo Rose marble. With rich blue veins running through the stone, this is not a countertop and backsplash that easily matches anything you pair with it, though that may be a “stepping stone” choice in your design process. The decision to include this marbled focal point helps drive decision-making for the rest of the kitchen. For instance, the Virginia Mist granite selected for the island was chosen as a break for the eyes and to keep the Paonazzo popping.

2. Don’t Overlook Lighting for Design

One of the important questions Pearce poses in the aforementioned blog is whether you need task lighting, mood lighting, or both? The ways to accomplish these are varied but selecting the right sconce, or lampshade, or accent lighting above your island can make the space sit just right.

3. Find Points of Interest to Complement Each Other

Complement, don’t overpower – some pieces are overbearing or loud, and a piece with a strong impact is a beautiful thing in design. To give a space harmony, it’s just important to remember that all of these elements will be in proximity to one another and when making decisions about color or style, some things just might not work. Pearce knew she wanted wood floors, and though she was initially enamored with our standout white oak options (she’s only human), this would be too much wood for her taste. Instead, our Regent Blue finish complements the blue veins of the marble, and applied molding cabinet fronts is a unique custom detail that adds interest without distracting the eye too much.

4. High Quality is an Environmental Choice

When you go with a high-end design choice, such as Pearce’s Bertazzoni appliances or Cabinet Joint cabinets, you are including something that can endure the test of time without requiring a replacement. While terms like ‘luxury’ and ‘custom’ do mean our cabinets come with all the bells and whistles you want them to, they also will last a long time without wear and ultimately, that is a choice that helps the environment. Stuff that degrades and weathers quickly will end up in a landfill. Cabinet Joint cabinets can end up in your home for the next occupant to enjoy after you.

5. Upper Cabinets are not a Given

Upper cabinets may not be for you. For Pearce, her home had enough storage elsewhere to compensate for not including upper cabinets in her kitchen, such as in her pantry and Regent Blue full-wall cabinets. The openness that comes with no upper cabinets was ideal for her space, but she also says that they may be the right aesthetic or practical choice for you. For a small space that needs the upper storage or an extra large space that needs to look a bit fuller with the upward visuals, wall cabinets can be a must-have and beautiful accessory. Just know that it is a choice and not always a necessity, especially with open shelving and additional storage in other areas.

Eclectic may not be to everyone’s taste, but these pearls of wisdom Pearce shares are functional shortcuts for designing a put-together room for any style. Before delving into your next project, consider what you want to stand out most. Ponder the stylistic and environmental impact of each element. Think about the lighting you’ll need and want. And, perhaps most importantly, think about how gorgeous, unique, long-lasting, and organized your cabinetry could be if you customize your space with Cabinet Joint.
